Sights to See 2008/02/05 03:41 Karma: 1
This will expose my upcoming tourist nature but what would everyone recommend for someone new to Oxford to see? I obviously don't want to be sightseeing the whole time but I'd also like to be able to hit the important spots up when I get there. I also figure that a wide range of people will give a wide range of options.

Thanks!

OK here goes:

1. Drink a pint of local beer at The Turf Inn
2. Sit on the park bench half way up South Park and watch the sunset.
3. Walk out the back of the ice rink and over the bridge to find a rather unusual wooden sculpture of a very large hand coming out of the group.
4. Go and have a look at the house where Alice in Wounder land was written.
5. Go play Aunt Sally.
6. Last but not least - go punting on the river!!

7. Go to the Pitt Rivers and look at the shrunken heads.
8. Find a good spot on the river and watch other people punting.
10. Go up Carfax tower
11. Have ice cream at a G&D's

Yep I'll 2nd those! I love the ice cream at G&D's. Apparently the milk for the ice cream comes from free range cows that milk themselves.

What is the name of the other tower to go up in the High St? I took a photo of it the other day and uploaded it, but don't know the name of it. I have been up several times.

Not to sure about playing Aunt Sally. lol. I would love to see it played though. I love ice cream so that would be one of the stops I would have to make. You guys have offered some great suggestions and what I really like about them are that they sound like they would be what the locals see and do and those are the things that I really like to see along with the more touristy things.

Haha, yes I do indeed want to try a game of Aunt Sally. I'll be getting to Oxford in the summer (if accepted) so it would be nice to have a pint at the Turf Inn and then walk around in parks and check out outside attractions.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. That tower on High St is gorgeous as well. I'd love to see some older architecture as well.

I like to see historical places, they have an environment which truely inspires me. The photo above is a masterpiece. Ice creams - we can get everywhere but the historical monuments are unique.

One of the things we always do when we travel to other places is to make sure to see the historical sites and museums. I always find them interesting.

If you are interested in muesuems and art exhibits you might consider this place.

The worlds oldest Museum is in Oxford. Oxford University Muesum, which was founded in 1863 still standing and open to the public, at no charge. Th Museum has everything in history, from dinasour finds to a mummys section. Even has children's learning and activities.

On your way to the Mueseum, you can take a walk up memorial St. Giles to the entrance .
