I need some advice... 2008/03/13 16:05 Karma: 0
I am currently working on applying for a student visa because I am planning to study in London. However, I learned that accommodation in London especially Central London would cost me much. I would like to know if it would be a good decision for me to stay somewhere in Oxford. I mean, would it be more practical for me to do so?

Well london to oxford is about 55 miles, doing that kind of commuting every day would cost you some! as a student i can imagine that would be a problem. You would also be missing out on uni social life being so far away from where you study. Yes it is expensive to live in london, but its not much cheaper in Oxford and certainly not cheap enough to consider as an option in my opinion. You could always look into shared accomodation in london with other students.

I would think that there might be some kind of discount for students to live in London? Or a match up type of thing where you can find other people that need room mates?

No such thing as discount on rents for students that i know of, rents are ridiculously high for a studio flat or one bed flat in london, your looking in the region of £150 per week and upwards.
The best option is a flat or room share.

I would definitely look into room share. If you aren't going to be able to afford the £150 a week for a studio flat, you probably don't want one that's even bigger and more expensive. You might try running a newspaper ad for a roommate, but be very careful if you do that and know how you're going to make sure they're alright (meaning safe) before they move in.

I'm pretty sure there's a notice board at uni's for this purpose too, also sites like http://www.students-lodging.com/london.asp are really good and worth taking a look at.

I have just visited the site and I have seen a handful information that I need. Thank you very much for sharing the site. I would just have to visit the site every now and then to see some updates.

What country are you coming from? If youre coming drom america, it should be fairly easy to get your student type visa. I got one very quickly with no hassle.

For lodging, I also agree that you need to find a roommate. With the expenses of tuitoin, i doubt you will easily afford an apartment on just your salary. HAve you thought about living with a family or on campus. There are alot of options.

I just had a good idea! MAybe you could post on oxfordtrribe an advertisement for a roommate. YOu could put it in the classifieds. There has to be someone who needs a roommate or has a friend who needs one. Try that out!
